Why were Eucalyptus Trees brought to Israel?

The tree is originally from Australia and was brought to Israel years ago as an aid to dry out swamps. Drying out the swamps significantly reduced the amount of mosquitos in Israel. By reducing the amount of mosquitos the risk of Malaria decreased!

The Eucalyptus Tree can be found in many different areas in Israel including the Galilee, Golan Heights, Upper Jordan Valley, the Gilboa, Carmel, Northern Valleys, Northern Negev and more...

There are over seven hundred species of Eucalyptus. In Israel the most prominent type of Eucalyptus Tree is the Eucalyptus Camaldulensis. This type of Eucalyptus can grow up to 45 meters, however, there are some types of Eucalyptus trees which can grow up to as much as 60.

The Eucalyptus is recognized for its fast growth and fast reproductive qualities. An evergreen tree which blossoms almost all year around. It has become very advantageous for many bee keepers as the Eucalyptus blossom or flowers are there for the bees for much longer in comparison to others. As a result the bees are producing more Eucalyptus Honey for a longer period of time. Eucalyptus Trees also produce Eucalyptus Oil. The oil is known to have many qualities of which today are being used to make many essential oil cosmetics, antiseptics, sweets, cough drops and mosquito repellants.

The Eucalyptus trees provide great shade and small forest areas all over Israel. Many of us enjoy and take advantage of these areas during the warmer months... It is the perfect place to relax and enjoy the outside without being too exposed to the sun!!!
