Chanuka - חנוכה - The Feast of Lights
Chanuka, in Hebrew חנוכה, also known as the Festival of Lights.
It is celebrated on the 25th day of Kisslev (Jewish Calendar) and lasts for Eight Days. Chanuka commemorates the victory of the Maccabeans (Jewish People) against the Greeks when they regained control of Jerusalem and the Temple. It is also a time when we remember the mircale of the oil. In the Temple they found only one bottle of oil- enough oil to light the Menora for one day. The miracle was when the oil lasted for eight whole days! A Chanukia ( 9 Branch Menora) is used every day for eight days.As soon as the candle is lit, blessings are recited and Chanuka songs are sung. It is traditional to eat foods which have been cooked in oil. The most popular being Doughnuts - (Suvganiot) and Potato Cakes - (Latkes). Children play with Dreidels decorated with the letters "נ ג ה פ" symbolizing the miracle of the oil - "nes gadol haya poh" in English " a great miracle happened here".
